Two Prosecutors
TWO PROSECUTORS
Soviet Union, 1937. It is the age of the great Stalinist purges. Thousands of letters from detainees falsely accused by the regime are burned in a prison cell. Against all odds, one of them reaches the newly appointed local prosecutor Alexander Kornyev. He does his utmost to meet the prisoner: a victim of agents of the secret police. A dedicated Bolshevik of integrity, the young prosecutor suspects foul play and his quest for justice will take him all the way through Moscow’s corridors of power to the Attorney General.
Two Prosecutors is the first fiction film of Ukraine-based filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa since 2019's acclaimed and ever more pertinent Donbass. The tightly controlled, haunting and timely historical drama is his greatest cinematic statement yet, and this year's highest ranked film on Screen Daily's international critics list. Two Prosecutors is a tale of the totalitarian regime's brutality that echoes in our present day.
